VIPPS® Accreditation Program

Welcome to the VIPPS (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites) information and verification site of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®).

vippsIn response to public concern of the safety of pharmacy practices on the Internet, NABP developed the VIPPS accreditation program in the spring of 1999. A coalition of state and federal regulatory associations, professional associations, and consumer advocacy groups provided their expertise in developing the criteria that VIPPS-accredited pharmacies follow.

To be VIPPS accredited, a pharmacy must comply with the licensing and survey requirements of their state and each state to which they dispense pharmaceuticals. In addition, pharmacies displaying the VIPPS Seal have demonstrated to NABP compliance with VIPPS criteria including patient rights to privacy, authentication and security of prescription orders, adherence to a recognized quality assurance policy, and provision of meaningful consultation between patients and pharmacists.

VIPPS pharmacy sites are identified by the VIPPS hyperlink Seal displayed on their Web sites. By clicking on the Seal, a visitor is linked to the NABP VIPPS site where verified information about the pharmacy is maintained by NABP. The public is also welcome to access the VIPPS site to search for a VIPPS Internet pharmacy that matches their needs.click to search>>

NABP was established in 1904 to assist state licensing boards in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards to protect the public health. Pharmacy boards from fifty states, the District of Columbia, three US territories, nine Canadian provinces, two Australian states, and New Zealand make up the association membership.

We at NABP hope you find the information helpful and invite your comments to continuously improve our service to you.

Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS®) Program and PayPal® Information

NABP is pleased that PayPal recognizes NABP’s VIPPS program, the industry standard for accreditation of Internet pharmacies.

In 1999, NABP launched VIPPS to evaluate and accredit qualifying online pharmacy practice sites. The program and its accompanying VIPPS seal of approval identify to the public those Internet pharmacy practice sites that are appropriately licensed, have been screened through the NABP clearinghouse, are legitimate online operators, and that have successfully completed a rigorous criteria review and on-site survey.

Validly licensed, US-based Internet pharmacy practice sites that offer or sell prescription drugs and prescription devices to consumers are eligible for VIPPS accreditation. To achieve accreditation, a pharmacy practice site must comply with the licensing and survey requirements of the states in which it does business, and must demonstrate to NABP compliance with VIPPS criteria including patient rights to privacy, authentication and security of prescription orders, maintenance of a quality assurance and improvement program, and provision of meaningful consultation between patients and pharmacists.
