PMPInterConnect.jpgThe NABP PMP InterConnect facilitates the transfer of prescription monitoring program (PMP) data across state lines to authorized users. It will allow participating state PMPs across the United States to be linked, providing a more effective means of combating drug diversion and drug abuse nationwide.

Protecting Public Health via Nationwide Platform for Tracking Drug Diversion

The NABP InterConnect will enhance the benefits of state PMPs by providing the means for physicians and pharmacists to more easily identify patients with prescription drug abuse and misuse problems, especially if that patient is crossing state lines to obtain those drugs. Current systems lack interoperability and data sharing among states, making it easier for doctor shoppers to avoid detection. This connected web of information will allow appropriate intervention and aid in the prevention of substance abuse and diversion of controlled substances.

In addition, law enforcement and regulatory agencies, where authorized by state law, will be able to obtain information that will help them quickly identify attempts to illegally divert controlled substances across state lines.

Secure System to Enable Data Sharing Across State Lines

The NABP InterConnect is a highly secure communications exchange platform that will facilitate the transmission of PMP data across state lines to authorized requestors, while ensuring that each state’s data-access rules are enforced. The NABP InterConnect will not house any data, and the system will not inhibit the legitimate prescribing or dispensing of prescription drugs.

Getting Connected

The NABP InterConnect is now fully operational. The PMPs in Arizona, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia have deployed NABP InterConnect statewide to users who are now able to securely exchange prescription data between the nine participating states. 

NABP continues to work with other state PMPs to facilitate their participation in the NABP InterConnect. Based on current implementation time frames, authorized users of PMPs in New Mexico and West Virginia are scheduled/slated to connect to PMP InterConnect in the second quarter of 2012. Since March, 20 states have already agreed to participate in the program and discussions are ongoing with a number of other states.

The First 200 Days: NABP PMP InterConnect by the Numbers
  • In the first 200 days since launch, the NABP PMP InterConnect has processed 158,562 requests between Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Virginia. 
  • The average hub response/processing time for those requests: 1.73 seconds
  • The average PMP response time for those requests: 5.74 seconds
  • In total, using NABP InterConnect, authorized users of the PMPs only waited an average of 7.5 seconds for a consolidated multi-state PMP report.
