World Customs Organization Members Unite to Ban Counterfeit Drugs
The World Customs Organization (WCO) will sign a declaration on June 24, 2010, to ban the making and marketing of counterfeit drugs, according to Reuters. The WCO mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of customs administrations and the organization represents 176 customs administrations across the globe that collectively process approximately 98% of world trade. Christophe Zimmermann, WCO anti-counterfeiting and piracy coordinator, told Reuters that having the national customs chiefs, representing the 176 customs administrations, sign the declaration will assist efforts to revamp legislation and improve coordination among enforcement agencies. Zimmermann also stated that there are more counterfeit drugs on the market than bona fide drugs.
