Wisconsin Governor Signs Law Requiring Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

Topics: Prescription monitoring program

On May 18, 2010, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle signed a bill (PDF) that directs the Pharmacy Examining Board to create a program to monitor the dispensing of Schedule II and Schedule III prescription drugs and other prescription drugs identified by the board as having a substantial potential for abuse. To implement the prescription drug monitoring program, the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing will apply for a federal grant to fund the program, and the Pharmacy Examining Board will develop rules to regulate the program. Specifically, the new law stipulates that the board will develop rules to “require a pharmacist or practitioner to generate a record documenting each dispensing of a prescription drug [controlled substance] and to deliver the record to the board.”
