USP and CDC Webinar Offered on Compounding TPN Preparations and the 2011 Investigation of Bacterial Outbreak

In April 2011, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a failure in a step of the sterilization process for compounded total parenteral nutrition (TPN) led to its contamination with Serratia marcescens bacteria, resulting in 19 cases of infection in Birmingham, AL, area hospitals, of which nine were fatal. To inform health care providers about the lessons learned from this event, CDC and United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) will present a joint public health Webinar to discuss the factors that resulted in the contamination. CDC will provide a review of its investigation and the breaches identified, and USP will provide a review of the official standards for sterile compounding. The Webinar will take place on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 1 PM EST, and details and registration instructions are provided on the USP Web site.
