Use of e-Prescribing Continues to Grow

Topics: Electronic prescriptions

Since federal support was offered in 2008, 234,000 prescribers are using electronic prescribing, up 216% from 74,000, according to the latest "National Progress Report on E-Prescribing and Interoperable Healthcare," published by Surescripts, operator of the largest e-prescription network that connects prescribers’ e-prescribing software to pharmacies. This is the fourth Surescripts annual report that tracks the status of e-prescribing adoption and use in the US. The report also indicates that about 25% of eligible prescriptions in the US were routed electronically, and that at the end of 2010, about 91% of community pharmacies were able to receive prescriptions electronically. “In addition to tracking numerous measures of health IT adoption and use, the report details what is driving the growth of e-prescribing and interoperable healthcare as well as recommendations for how to continue that growth,” as noted in a Surescripts press release.
