The Notable Professor Emeritus Charles D. Hepler to Speak During NABP’s Fall Educational Conference
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP® ) is pleased to provide attendees with the opportunity to hear Charles D. Hepler, PhD, eminent professor emeritus for the University of Florida College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmacy Health Care Administration, discuss his perspectives and insight concerning the professional and practice-related implications of medication therapy management (MTM) and its specific relevancy to the boards of pharmacy during NABP’s 2006 Fall Educational Conference (FEC), held November 3-4, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency Savannah in Savannah, GA.
Dr Hepler will present during the continuing education (CE) session “The Delivery of Pharmacist Care by the Non-Pharmacist: Legal, Regulatory, and Professional Implications,” on Saturday, November 4, from 9:45 - 11:45 am. During this session, participants will explore issues raised by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, while considering the state versus federal oversight, as well as discuss the determinants that qualify non-pharmacist practitioners to provide MTM services.
Prior to joining the University of Florida in 1989, Dr Hepler was on the faculties of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. As principle investigator of the University of Florida’s Therapeutic Outcomes Monitoring Project, he aided in the development of a practical system for pharmaceutical care in community pharmacy. He has also consulted on pharmaceutical care projects in Denmark, Spain, and British Columbia and has presented more than 60 professional papers in 15 different nations.
Dr Hepler has written more than 80 research, scholarly, and professional articles; 14 book chapters; and three books, including his most recent coauthored book Preventing Medication Errors and Improving Drug Therapy Outcomes: A Management Systems Approach. The book explores medication use systems and offers theoretical and practical solutions to problems of medication misuse.
As a corecipient of the American Pharmacists Association’s 1997 Remington Medal, Dr Hepler was bestowed one of the highest honors in pharmacy. He has received several additional awards including the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s Pharmaceutical Practitioner of the Year in 1997. Dr Hepler holds a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Connecticut and master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Iowa.
Attendees of this session will receive two CE credit hours. There will also be a question and answer session following the CE session.
NABP is the independent, international, and impartial Association that assists its member boards and jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards for the purpose of protecting the public health.
NABP and the NABP Foundation are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn up to 10 hours of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to NABP. A validated Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit.
