South Dakota News: Automated Mechanical Distribution Devices
Published in the April 2007 South Dakota State Board of Pharmacy Newsletter
Automated mechanical distribution devices (AMDDs) are used to assist pharmacists when dispensing prescription medications.
South Dakota law authorizes the South Dakota State Board of Pharmacy’s oversight of this type of equipment [SDCL 36-11- 11(6)]. The Board adopted administrative rules (ARSD 20:51:17) to implement the use of this equipment and to ensure that a pharmacist is involved with AMDD use to protect the public safety. These rules require that any pharmacist wishing to use AMDDs first obtain approval from the Board of Pharmacy and provide certain information to the Board, including policies and procedures for the use of such equipment.
By May 31, 2007, the Board is asking that pharmacies using AMDD equipment (Omnicell, Inc; Pyxis; ScriptPro LLC, etc) provide their current policies and procedures to this office. The Board will contact those whose policies and procedures may need revision.
If you have further questions, please contact the Board office at 605/362-2737.
