Single Concentration OTC Pediatric Pain Relievers in Distribution Soon
To help prevent acetaminophen overdose in infants and children, drug manufacturers will begin distributing a single concentration OTC pain reliever for pediatric use. Current formulations in different concentrations for infants and for older children have caused some confusion among parents in determining the correct dosage to administer, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. The new OTC medications will be a single concentration of acetaminophen and the dosage will vary according to the child’s age. Manufacturers will begin distributing the single concentration pain relievers in summer 2011, with all manufacturers distributing it by the end of the year. A joint meeting of the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and the Pediatric Advisory Committee, coordinated by FDA, will take place May 17-18, 2011 and will examine related issues. The committees will discuss recommendations for labeling of OTC pediatric acetaminophen products and how administration can be improved to reduce errors.
