SimplyThick Product Linked to Cases of Infant NEC and Two Deaths
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert regarding SimplyThick, a thickening agent for management of swallowing disorders, and advises parents and caregivers not to use the product to feed premature infants as it may cause necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition. The product, often mixed with breast milk or infant formula products, has been linked to 15 cases of NEC, including two deaths, involving premature infants who were fed SimplyThick for varying amounts of time. FDA will provide updates as information is made available. Current information is available in an FDA MedWatch Safety Alert and in an FDA Consumer Update.
