Second DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, April 30, 2011

Topics: Medication collection program disposal and Prescriptions

The next DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will take place Saturday, April 30, 2011, providing patients a means for safe disposal of unwanted, unused prescription medications – including controlled substances – at authorized locations across the country. The event will continue efforts to help rid the nation’s medicine cabinets of potentially dangerous, unwanted prescription drugs, particularly controlled substances, thus helping to eliminate a major source of abused prescription medications. The first National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 25, 2010, saw participation from 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies and collected approximately 242,000 pounds of medications.

Patients may use the DEA drug take-back day locator, available at www.nationaltakebackday.com, to find the take-back location nearest to their home. Sites will continue to be added until April 30, 2011; so, checking back on the locator may provide the most convenient location. DEA reminds patients that the take-back service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Sites will accept tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms of unwanted medication. Personal information may be blacked out on prescription bottles, or medications may be emptied from the bottles into the bins provided at the events.
