San Francisco Bill Calls for Drug Disposal Program by Drug Companies
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved a bill that would require pharmaceutical companies to implement a drug disposal program for the city by September 2011. Intended to help prevent accidental drug ingestion and prescription drug abuse, the bill would require drug companies to set up, fund, and operate a program to provide the city’s citizens a safe, environmentally sound means for disposal of unused, unwanted prescription medications. The board took a second vote on the legislation on January 4, 2011, and the city’s mayor has 10 days from that time to veto it, as reported in the San Francisco Examiner.
