Repackaging of Medications (Defeated Resolution No. 101-11-05)

Topics: Resolutions

Resolution No: 101-11-05
Title: Repackaging of Medications
Action: Defeated

Whereas, many hospitals are transitioning to patient safety point of care systems that utilize bar code technology to minimize the incidence of medication errors; and

Whereas, these point of care systems require the placement of bar codes on prepackaged medications; and

Whereas, current federal regulations prohibit hospitals from prepackaging medications for dispensing in other hospitals unless the hospital pharmacy is registered pursuant to Section 510 of the federal, Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that NABP work with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to study the feasibility of allowing the repackaging of medications by one hospital for dispensing by other hospitals under common ownership.

(Resolution defeated at NABP’s 101st Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA)
