Renowned Dean and Professor J. Lyle Bootman to Speak at NABP’s Fall Educational Conference
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) is pleased to provide attendees with the opportunity to hear the renowned J. Lyle Bootman, PhD, distinguished dean and professor at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Pharmacy, discuss the challenges faced in developing, improving, and maintaining patient safety and quality care during NABP’s 2006 Fall Educational Conference (FEC), held November 3-4, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency Savannah in Savannah, GA.
Dr Bootman will present during the continuing education (CE) session “A National Agenda to Improve Patient Safety and Quality Care: Implications for the Boards of Pharmacy” on Friday, November 3, from 1:15 - 3:15 pm. During this session, participants will review the major recommendations of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report Preventing Medication Errors: Quality Chasm Series, as well as explore provisions of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 that require plan sponsors to develop quality assurance measures to reduce medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and drug interactions.
As cochair of IOM’s Identifying and Preventing Medication Errors Committee, Dr Bootman aided in the writing of the report, which was released on July 20, 2006. The report recommends a series of actions including, but not limited to, increasing communication and interaction between patients and health care providers as well as steps patients should take to protect themselves.
Dr Bootman is also the founding and executive director of the Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research at the UA College of Pharmacy. His research and numerous publications have received worldwide attention including acclaim for his book Principles of Pharmacoeconomics, which is translated into six languages and utilized in more than 35 countries. Dr Bootman’s international reputation continues to thrive in both the professional and public media.
Along with several outstanding achievement awards, Dr Bootman was named as one of the 50 most influential pharmacists in America by The American Druggist in October 1997. He was president of both the American Pharmacists Association and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Society from 1999 to 2000. He holds a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the UA College of Pharmacy and master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in pharmacy administration from the University of Minnesota.
Attendees of this session will receive two CE credit hours. There will also be a question and answer session following the CE session.

Participants may earn up to 10 hours of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to NABP. A validated Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Credit.
