A study by researchers at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy shows that prescription drug abuse led to more than 1,600 deaths in Tennessee over a three-year period. According to an article in the Tennessean, the unreleased study shows that 77% of substance related deaths in the state were related to prescription drugs. Todd Bess, assistant dean of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, told the Tennessean that the majority of the prescription-drug related deaths were accidental, and that only 8% were documented as suicides. Bess has been working with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the state medical examiner’s office to conduct the study.
