Operation Safeguard Prevents Illegal Drugs from Entering the US

Topics: Internet pharmacy

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agents examined packages containing illegal pharmaceuticals shipped from foreign countries at the Miami International Mail Facility in the three-day Operation Safeguard, an event intended to prevent the drugs from entering the United States. Working with the US Customs and Border Patrol and the US Postal Service, FDA agents intercepted counterfeit, substandard, and other non-approved, unsafe drugs, many of which were purchased over the Internet. After examining, analyzing, and recording the contents of the parcels, FDA must return the packages to sender, since the agency does not have the authority to destroy them, as reported in the Miami Herald.

More information about the risks of ordering drugs on the Internet and the risks of counterfeit drugs can be found in the Consumer Protection section of the NABP Web site.
