Oklahoma News: Pediatric Use of Methadone
Published in the July 2007 Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Newsletter
Leslie Patatanian, PharmD, DPh, clinical pharmacy specialist at Integris Medical Center, shared a letter with the Board from DEA stating that infants and children suffering Infant Abstinence Syndrome (IAS) do not fall under the Narcotic Addict Treatment Act. Therefore, they are not subject to the same rules and regulations that apply to adult narcotic addicts. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is the agency responsible for addressing issues surrounding this type of treatment. You may make inquiries through its Web site at www.csat.samhsa.gov. Pharmacies receiving methadone prescriptions for treating pediatric patients with iatrogenic narcotic dependence may legally fill them.
