New York State Assembly Considers Prescription Monitoring Program Bill
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman introduced legislation requiring the establishment of a prescription monitoring program (PMP) in the state. As reported by New York’s ABC 50, the “Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing Act,” or “I-STOP,” calls for the development of a PMP that could be accessed by physicians and pharmacists. The PMP system would assist health care providers in making appropriate treatment and dispensing decisions, identifying patients who may need assistance, and preventing doctor shopping for prescriptions. The law is also intended to assist New York law enforcement in detecting and preventing prescription drug diversion. The bill (S05720) has been referred to committees in the New York State Assembly.
