New York Doctor Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges of Illegally Distributing Oxycodone

Topics: Controlled substances, Diversion, and Dea

New York physician Felix Rodriguez pled guilty to the distribution of more than 1,000 oxycodone pills to individuals without legitimate medical need for the drug. According to the filed allegations, when Rodriguez wrote these prescriptions, he knew that by doing so he was violating the law and generally accepted medical practice. Manhattan United States Attorney Preet Bharara stated that the doctor violated his oath to do no harm “by using his position of trust to distribute Oxycodone outside the scope of his professional medical practice.” Bharara added that, “The abuse of diverted prescription pain medication is the fastest growing drug problem in our country. We will continue to work with federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations to identify and investigate those responsible at all levels.” Rodriguez pled guilty February 27, 2013, in White Plains, NY, federal court before US District Judge Kenneth M. Karas, and the sentencing date is scheduled for May 20, 2013. More information is available in a Department of Justice news release.
