New PSE Law in Arkansas Requires Pharmacists to Verify Medical Necessity of the Drug

Topics: Pseudoephedrine

A new law in Arkansas will require pharmacists to verify the legitimate medical need of individuals purchasing products containing pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient needed for illegal methamphetamine production. Senate Bill 437 was passed in the legislature and was signed into law by Governor Mike Beebe on March 23, 2011. The law also authorizes the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy to identify other non-prescription drugs of concern that should be kept behind the counter and sold under a pharmacist’s supervision.
