New FDA Search Tool Provides Consumers with Easier Access to Information About Recalls
A new recall information section on the FDA Web site allows consumers to locate information about recalls of food, drugs, and other products more easily than with the prior format. This new section organizes recall information by category – food, drugs, animal health, biologics, and medical devices – and allows the user to organize information by date, brand name, or company name. The new section also includes a search tool for locating information on specific products. A link to the news release on each recall is provided for consumers seeking more detailed information.
The new recall section of the FDA Web site was developed to carry out requirements under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed into law by President Obama in January. Prior to passage of FSMA, FDA did not have mandatory recall authority for food and feed products other than infant formula. For recalls conducted under FSMA, FDA must indicate whether the recall is ongoing or completed and post this information in the new recall section of the FDA Web site. More information on the new recall information section and search tool is available in an FDA press release.
