Nebraska News: Make Sure Your Technicians are Legit!
Published in the February 2009 Nebraska Board of Pharmacy Newsletter
Pharmacies employing technicians should check the registration status of their technicians to ensure that they are in compliance by employing only properly registered technicians. This is part of the compliance for question 33 on the yearly Pharmacy Quality Assurance Report and also during an inspection completed by the department inspectors (ITEM No. 33: All requirements and documentation are met for the utilization of pharmacy technicians). Facilities may check the status of their technician registrations by asking them to supply a copy of their registration or by checking their registration status at the online verification Web site: www.nebraska.gov/LISSearch/search.cgi.
Pharmacy technicians have 30 days from the date of hire to send an application for registration to the department, in order to continue to work in the pharmacy as a technician. Technician applications and application information are available online at www.dhhs.ne.gov/crl/medical/pharm/Pharmtech/pharmtech.htm.
If a technician is unable to supply the facility with a copy of their registration, and/or the facility has been unsuccessful at finding registration information through the department’s online verification Web site, or if the technician states that an application was sent to the department more than 150 days ago and he or she has not received a registration, the facility should contact the department at 402/471-2118 in order to check on the status of the application before allowing the individual to work as a technician in the pharmacy.
Also, remember that all registered technicians are required to renew by January 1 of all odd years, no matter what date their registration was issued.
