Nebraska Medication Collection and Disposal Law Adopted

Topics: Medication collection program disposal

A new law in Nebraska will allow pharmacies to accept expired, unwanted medications – except for controlled substances – for disposal beginning in September 2011. As reported by the Omaha World-Herald, pharmacies may choose to participate in the program and the law authorizes pharmacies to charge for the disposal service. Collected medications are packaged and shipped to a disposal service in Texas for destruction using an incineration process that is safe for the environment. Disposing of the unwanted drugs also helps consumers prevent drug misuse and accidental poisonings.
