NABP Honors Award Recipients at 98th Annual Meeting
During the Annual Awards Dinner at the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy's (NABP) 98th Annual Meeting, the following individuals were recognized for their tireless efforts and dedication to NABP.
2001-2002 Honorary President
Joseph A. Whaley, Jr, RPh, who was named 2001-2002 Honorary President at last year's meeting was honored this year. Mr Whaley has been actively involved with NABP for more than 10 years; first as a member of the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy, and later as a member of the NABP Executive Committee and the Association's Treasurer. As a member of the Georgia Board and the pharmacy director of the Dougherty County Health Department in southwestern Georgia, Mr Whaley provided public health pharmacy services to the indigent and underserved community for more than 20 years. During that time he worked with state and national agencies and organizations, including NABP, to establish regulations and procedures to improve the quality and outcomes of pharmaceutical care. In 1994, he attracted national attention when he mobilized Georgia's pharmacists to provide emergency drug delivery and prescription services to the 5,000 victims of Tropical Storm Alberto. Numerous state and national agencies and organizations honored him for his extraordinary efforts during this time of need.
2001-2002 President's Award
President Richard K. "Mick" Markuson, RPh, was recognized for his achievements during his term as president of NABP with the 2001-2002 President's Award. His energy and unceasing dedication to the highest standards of pharmacy practice and the missions of NABP and its member boards to protect the public health have raised the bar for those of us who follow in his footsteps. For many years Mr Markuson has shared his knowledge and vision of pharmacy practice and regulation as a member of such task forces and committees as the Advisory Committee on Pharmacy Practice, the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, the Task Force on Pharmacy Technicians, and the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation. The executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy, he is also active in the Idaho State Pharmaceutical Association.
2001-2002 Lester E. Hosto Distinguished Service Award
NABP's Lester E. Hosto Distinguished Service Award is presented to those individuals whose contributions to the profession have, in the opinion of the Executive Committee, significantly furthered the goals and objectives of the Association. Susan C. Lutz, RPh, was named the 2001-2002 recipient of this award. A former member of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners, Ms Lutz was an active member of the Advisory Committee on Examinations for almost a decade. Although she recently retired from ACE, she continues her involvement on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination™ (NAPLEX®) Review Committee. Ms Lutz has also been active in the Iowa Pharmacists Association, including her connection with the Academy of Pharmacy Practice as chair, member of the Board of Trustees, member of the Task Force on Entry Level Degree in Pharmacy, the Professional Conduct Task Force, and the Task Force on Consultant Pharmacy Practice. She has also been heavily involved in her community providing pharmacy care to the public.
2001-2002 Henry Cade Award
NABP established the Henry Cade Award in memory of NABP's 1987-1988 president, in honor of those individuals within the pharmaceutical industry who have supported the goals and objectives of the Association and the state boards of pharmacy to protect the public health. The 2001-2002 recipient is Marily H. Rhudy, RPh. She was recently honored by her alma mater, the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy for exemplary leadership, commitment, and dedicated service to the profession of pharmacy, students, and the public. Now vice president of public affairs at Wyeth Corporation, Ms Rhudy secured the generous grant that enables all final-year pharmacy students in the United States to receive NABP's Survey of Pharmacy Law. Ms Rhudy was the first woman pharmacist elected president of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and was later appointed by President Clinton to the White House Task Force on Health Care Reform as a member of a Health Professionals Review Group. In 1989, the Topeka Capital-Journal recognized her as a "Kansan of Distinction."
