NABP Highlights Patient Safety at its 101st Annual Meeting

"A Medley for Patient Safety: Accreditation, Self Assessment, and Quality Care"

— the theme to this year's NABP 101st Annual Meeting — firmly establishes that patient safety continues to be at the forefront in the pharmacy profession, an initiative that NABP shares and supports.

The Annual Meeting, which will be held May 21-24, 2005, at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, LA, will offer meeting attendees the opportunity to earn up to five Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-approved continuing education (CE) credit hours by attending a variety of CE sessions on such topics as the progress of patient safety since 1999, portfolio development, quality assurance programs, and radio frequency identification. Attendees can also participate in other events including the President's Welcome Reception, the Educational Presentation Area/Poster Session, the New Member Seminar, and the Annual Awards Dinner.

CE Sessions Discuss Current Topics

This year's Annual Meeting focuses on current and vital continuing education. As in past years, the CE sessions will be divided into three programming tracks targeting state board of pharmacy executive officers and members, compliance staff, and practicing pharmacists. There are also two CE programs offered in the joint programming track, which is geared toward all Annual Meeting participants. The Executive Officer and Board Member session, "Maintaining Medication Product Integrity: Applications of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Electronic Product Codes (EPC) for the Regulation of Wholesale Distribution; " the Compliance Officer session, "State Safety-Mandated Medication Error Quality Assurance Programs: Surveying for Patient Safety;" and the Pharmacy Practice session, "Portfolio Development: A Critical Aspect of Continuing Professional Development;" run concurrently on Monday, May 23 from 10:30 AM to noon. The first Joint CE session, "Regulatory Initiatives and Innovative Technologies in Deterring Drug Abuse, Diversion, and Theft" will be held on Monday, May 23 from 8:15 to 10:15 AM. Lastly, "Realizing a Safer Health System: The Progress of Patient Safety Since 1999" is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24 from 9 to 10:30 AM.

Keynote Address

Being a hero once is no easy feat, and being a hero day after day over a 30-year span takes dedication, judgment, and teamwork. United States Coast Guard Captain Larry Brudnicki, best known for his two dramatic rescues during the "Perfect Storm" off the coast of New England in October 1991 has utilized his skills for assessing risks, making quick decisions, and inspiring teamwork to save lives. As keynote speaker, Captain Brudnicki will deliver ideas on setting goals, being prepared, understanding risks, and working in teams in today's challenging business environment during the Keynote Address on May 22, at 1:15 PM.
