NABP Executive Director Emeritus Mahaffey Receives APhA Award
Former National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Executive Director Emeritus Fred T. Mahaffey, PharmD, was awarded the American Pharmaceutical Association's (APhA) Hugo H. Schaefer Award, at the APhA's 148th Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Francisco, Calif, March 16-20, 2001.
The Hugo H. Schaefer Award was established by the APhA in 1964 to honor its longtime treasurer, Dr Hugo H. Schaefer, for his contributions to the profession of pharmacy and, in particular, for his service to the APhA. The annual award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding voluntary contributions to society, as well as to the profession of pharmacy and the APhA. Dr Mahaffey was chosen in recognition of his association with NABP, where he served as executive director from 1962 to 1987.
Under Mahaffey's guidance, the Association introduced the first standardized licensure examination for pharmacists. The Blue Ribbon Examination set the stage for today's North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX®), which is used in all US jurisdictions except California. "For 25 years, Mahaffey was an integral part of the Association," states NABP President Jerry Moore. "This is a well-deserved award and NABP congratulates him."
During his career, Mahaffey was a member of the APhA House of Delegates and Board of Trustees. He also took an interest in the United States Pharmacopeial (USP) and the National Drug Trade Conference, now known as the National Conference of Pharmaceutical Organizations (NCPO). He was also responsible for the formation of the Federation of Associated Regulatory Boards (FARB).
Mahaffey received his bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and an honorary doctor of pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
NABP is the independent, international, and impartial Association that assists its member boards and jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards for the purpose of protecting the public health.
