NABP Executive Committee Names 2011 Honorary President

Each year the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) Executive Committee selects an individual to serve as its honorary president for the coming year. NABP is pleased to announce that Kim A. Caldwell, RPh, has been awarded this honor for 2011. In recognition of his commitment to the Association’s mission and goals, NABP named Mr Caldwell as its honorary president for his service to the public health, for his commitment to NABP and the boards of pharmacy, and for his diligence and dedication to the practice of pharmacy and patient care.

Mr Caldwell’s leadership in every facet of his career has distinguished him as a pharmacist committed to the protection of public health. Mr Caldwell was first appointed to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy in 1997, and served as the Board president from 1999 to 2000. In addition, he was appointed for two terms, once by former Governor George Bush and once by Governor Rick Perry, as the pharmacist member of the Texas Statewide Health Coordinating Council.

Currently, he is the director of Competitive Health Analytics, Inc, a business unit within Humana, Inc. Prior to this position, he served as senior director of pharmaceutical outreach/reimbursement at Abbott Laboratories from 2005 to 2008. In 2004, Mr Caldwell was asked to join the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) where he took the position of division director of Clinical and Economic Performance in the Center for Beneficiary Choices. In this capacity, he led the development and implementation of the Medicare prescription drug benefit. Mr Caldwell was responsible for operational aspects of the drug benefit including performance measures, utilization management and measures, quality, safety, medication therapy management, drug trend analysis, cost trend analysis, and Part D electronic prescribing. Further, Mr Caldwell’s contributions were significant in the development of the CMS data warehouse and analytics strategy.

Mr Caldwell has been an active member of NABP, having participated in numerous committees and task forces including the Committee on Law Enforcement/Legislation and the Task Force on Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions. Mr Caldwell also took on the position of chair for many of the NABP task forces includ¬ing the Task Force to Review Accreditation Standards for Community Pharmacy; the Task Force on Continuous Quality Improvement, Peer Review, and Inspecting for Patient Safety; and the Task Force to Examine NABP’s Data Resources.

Mr Caldwell earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and began his career practicing as a community pharmacist in 1974. He owned and operated an independent pharmacy for 20 years while also practicing as a consultant pharmacist for long-term care facilities. Subsequently, he worked as a pharmacy manager at a medical center and as director of pharmacy for a large health care company. His experience also includes several years as vice president overseeing compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations for an e-prescribing company and for a national pharmacy benefit manager.
His professional service has included participation and leadership with several pharmacy and health care related organizations. He serves as chair and has been a longtime member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Legislative Committee and has been an active member of AMCP.
