NABP Executive Committee Names 2010 Honorary President Howard C. Anderson, Jr, RPh
Each year the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) Executive Committee selects an individual to serve as its honorary president for the coming year. NABP is pleased to announce that Howard C. Anderson, Jr, RPh, has been awarded this honor for 2010. In recognition of his commitment to the Association’s mission and goals, NABP named Mr Anderson as its honorary president for his service to the public health, for his commitment to NABP and the boards of pharmacy, and for his diligence and dedication to the practice of pharmacy and patient care.
Mr Anderson has had an active and influential career as a pharmacist, pharmacy owner, and pharmacy association executive leader. Further, he has dedicated himself to protecting the public health through his work as the executive director of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, a position he has held since 1997. Mr Anderson was appointed to the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy in 1984, and served until 1994, with two years of service as Board president. Mr Anderson has been instrumental in helping other states implement guidelines for pharmacy technicians. In 1993, while he served as a member of the North Dakota Board, the state became one of the first to register technicians.
During his term as executive director of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy, Mr Anderson accomplished pioneering work in the area of telepharmacy, a practice that now brings pharmacy services to over 40,000 patients in rural North Dakota communities. Under Mr Anderson’s leadership, the North Dakota Board developed rules and regulations that would support the implementation of telepharmacy. North Dakota was the first state to pass administrative rules allowing retail pharmacies to operate in certain remote areas with a technician on site and a pharmacist present by television for supervision and patient consultations.
A strong and active supporter of the NABP mission, Mr Anderson is currently the secretary/treasurer of District 5 of the NABP membership. He served as a member of the NABP Executive Committee from 2001-2004. Mr Anderson has also served on numerous committees and task forces, including the 2004 Task Force on Importation Enforcement. In addition, he was the chairperson of both the 2007 Task Force on Prescription Drug Diversion from Common Carriers, and the 1999 Task Force to Examine the Quality and Standards of Internship Requirements.
After graduating from North Dakota State University, Mr Anderson joined his father as co-owner of Turtle Lake Rexall Drug, in Turtle Lake, ND, in 1968. Mr Anderson continued to own and operate the pharmacy for 35 years. In 1976, he became the pharmacist-in-charge at Turtle Lake Community Memorial Hospital where he practiced for 20 years. In 1976, Mr Anderson also became co-owner of a second pharmacy located in Helena, MT.
In addition to his service for the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy and for NABP, Mr Anderson has served as executive vice president of the North Dakota Pharmaceutical Association from 1991 to 1997, and as the executive vice president of the North Dakota Pharmacy Service Corporation from 1993 to 1997. He has served continuously since 1993 as a member of the North Dakota State Health Council. He has also co-authored several peer-reviewed articles on telepharmacy and a book chapter for an upcoming American Pharmacists Association book on rural health. These publications clearly define the opportunities for the pharmacy technician in the telepharmacy setting.
Mr Anderson has a lovely wife Joan, four sons, five grandchildren, and is expecting another grandchild soon.
