Thomson Corporation to Divest Prometric, NAPLEX/MPJE Test Vendor
Recently, The Thomson Corporation -- the parent company of Prometric, which provides examination administration services for the NAPLEX and MPJE -- announced that it is planning to divest the Thomson Learning division, of which Prometric is part. The company also announced that because of Prometric's unique business model in comparison to the Thomson Learning division, it is best for Prometric and its clients that it be sold independently of the rest of the Thomson Learning business. NABP has been assured that during the sale negotiations and beyond, Prometric will remain committed to ensuring that its relationships with clients and candidates remain top priority. Prometric's management structure and people will remain unchanged, as will the quality and range of products and services it provides. NABP will provide more detailed information in a memo to the boards. In addition, NABP staff remains in close communication with the Prometric support team and will inform the boards, schools, and candidates of any changes that may impact them. More information on the sale is available at http://www.prometric.com/Prometric.htm.
Two More Lots of Blood Glucose Test Strips Identified as Counterfeit
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 23 announced the discovery of two additional lots of counterfeit LifeScan, Inc, OneTouch® brand blood glucose test strips. This update comes on the heels of an October 3 announcement from FDA and LifeScan alerting the public to several incidents of counterfeit blood glucose test strips being sold in the United States for use with various models of OneTouch® blood glucose monitors. Use of these counterfeit test strips by diabetes patients could result in inaccurate test results, which could lead to improper insulin treatment, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. The counterfeit test strips were distributed to pharmacies and retailers nationwide by various distributors. More information on identifying the counterfeit test strips is available from LifeScan at http://www.lifescan.com/company/about/press/counterfeit/.

The presentation focused on state-specific efforts to address electronic prescribing and the impact of interactions between state and federal laws. In particular, the presentation focused on how the Drug Enforcement Administration's controlled substances laws and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' electronic prescribing requirements impact state regulation of electronic prescribing, and sometimes create contradicting layers of regulation.
