NABP Honors Executive Director Emeritus with Dedication of Fred T. Mahaffey Boardroom
On February 8, 2007, NABP will commemorate its former patriarch with the dedication of the Fred T. Mahaffey Boardroom at its Mount Prospect, IL headquarters. Dr Mahaffey died on June 19, 2006, at the age of 82, after having served 25 years as NABP's third executive director. He is remembered for his instrumental role in establishing the first standardized pharmacist licensing examination, the national drug code, the NABP number for pharmacies, the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards, the Federal Drug Law Examination and the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee program. He was also a member of the United States Pharmacopeia Board of Trustees. Throughout his career, Dr Mahaffey advocated the important role of the state boards of pharmacy.
NABP and FDA Staff Meet to Assess Pharmacy Regulatory and Safety Issues
NABP staff met with Food and Drug Administration representatives on January 31, 2007, in Rockville, MD, to assess the current status of and future needs for pharmacy regulatory and safety initiatives. Participants discussed measures to address the counterfeit drug problem, including the status of the Prescription Drug Marketing Act, state laws and programs, radio frequency identification/track-and-trace programs, NABP's Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributor program, and the Counterfeit Alert Network. Other meeting highlights included drug importation, pharmacy compounding, patient safety measures, and unapproved drugs.
ACPE Redefines Continuing Education for the Profession of Pharmacy
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) recently approved a revised definition of continuing education for the profession of pharmacy. The definition was revised to better describe the quality of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) required by ACPE and to assist CPE providers in planning programs to contribute to the professional development of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The revised definition will be implemented on August 1, 2007, with a transition period extending to December 31, 2007. Providers will be evaluated according to this definition and its contents beginning January 1, 2008. More information is available on the ACPE Web site at http://www.acpe-accredit.org/.
Volunteers Brave Icy Conditions to Attend MPJE State-specific Review Meeting
Despite icy conditions that resulted in flight cancellations and delays, 78 volunteer Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® (MPJE®) item reviewers attended the MPJE State-specific Review Meeting that was held in Austin on January 19-21. Out of the 46 jurisdictions that participate in the MPJE program, representatives from 40 jurisdictions attended.The MPJE State-specific Review Meeting is extremely important to the program because it is during this meeting that the state boards of pharmacy determine the appropriateness of current examination items for candidates seeking licensure in their state and review new items according to changes in state and federal pharmacy law.
Eight Facilities Awarded VAWD Accreditation
NABP recently accredited eight new facilities through its Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributors® (VAWD®) program, bringing the total number of accredited facilities to 53. A full listing of VAWD facilities is available in the VAWD section of NABP's Web site, http://www.nabp.net.
- AMS Acquisition Corporation dba American Medical Services specializes in distributing pharmaceutical oncology products to clinics nationwide. The company received accreditation for its Hickory Hills, IL facility.
- Auburn Pharmaceutical is a distributor of generic pharmaceuticals. The company received accreditation for its Troy, MI facility.
- Butler Animal Health Supply, LLC, is a distributor of companion animal healthcare products. The company received accreditation for its Lexington, KY, and Columbus, OH facilities.
- MediMedia USA, Inc dba Triple i conducts prescription drug sample fulfillment and distribution services to practitioners. The company received accreditation for its Carlstadt, NJ facility.
- Prasco Laboratories is a privately held pharmaceutical company that distributes drugs through the major distribution channels. The company received accreditation for its Cincinnati, OH facility.
- Wal-Mart Stores East, LP, dba Wal-Mart Pharmacy Warehouse, has received accreditation for three of its facilities. The Rogers, AR, and Crawfordsville, IN facilities distributes prescription medications to Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club pharmacies, and the Bentonville, AR facility distributes Schedule 2 products to pharmacies within the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club chain.
