NABP Awards Independent Pharmacies DMEPOS Accreditation

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) is pleased to announce the accreditation of several independent pharmacies through the Association’s durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) accreditation program. The DMEPOS program ensures that pharmacies supplying DMEPOS products meet the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality and accreditation standards.

A deadline of October 31, 2007, was set by CMS specifically for those suppliers, located or serving beneficiaries in the first 10 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), that wished to participate in the competitive acquisition program. Suppliers who met this deadline may now be considered for a contract for competitive bidding, thereby qualifying the pharmacy for reimbursement for Medicare.

“By meeting the October 31 deadline, these independent pharmacies are doing their part to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries receive the appropriate products, services, and patient care associated with DMEPOS,” states NABP President Oren M. Peacock, Jr, RPh. “With a thorough understanding of the complexities of pharmacy practice and regulation, NABP is the only pharmacy-specific organization approved for DMEPOS accreditation.”

CMS named NABP an accrediting organization for pharmacies that supply DMEPOS products in November 2006. The Association has more than 100 years of experience in pharmacy regulation and provides pharmacies with a cost-effective and straightforward DMEPOS accreditation process that meets CMS requirements. The NABP DMEPOS accreditation program is best suited for pharmacies that provide a limited line of durable medical equipment.
