NABP 107th Annual Meeting Attendees to Unite in San Antonio During Important Business Sessions, Timely CPE Programs, and Unique Networking Events

San Antonio, a city that blends history and culture, surrounds attendees with the perfect backdrop for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) 107th Annual Meeting, “Boards of Pharmacy and NABP – Bridging to Unity and Strength,” which will take place May 21-24, 2011, at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio, TX. Dubbed the “place of refreshing waters” by the Payaya Indians in the 1600s, San Antonio will allow attendees the opportunity to explore the historic city as well as shape the future of pharmacy through involvement in important NABP Business Sessions, during which delegates elect new Executive Committee officers and members and attendees learn of proposed amendments to the NABP Constitution and Bylaws. In addition, participants may earn up to nine hours (0.9 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit while networking with peers.

Continuing Pharmacy Education

Timely and informative CPE sessions designed to address current issues affecting the regulation of pharmacy practice will be available to attendees of the 107th Annual Meeting. These sessions, led by educators, regulators, and others who will share their knowledge, experience, and insight to the regulation of pharmacy practice, will provide attendees the opportunity to earn up to nine hours (0.9 CEUs) of CPE credit. Four joint CPE sessions are available to attendees. One of two concurrent sessions are also available, offering one session geared for state board of pharmacy executive officers and members and the other for compliance staff. In addition, there will be one pre-meeting CPE session on Saturday, May 21, from 2 to 4 PM.

On Sunday, May 22, from 8 to 11:30 AM, is the Educational Poster Session themed “Strengthening Public Protection,” which offers attendees a unique opportunity to earn one contact hour (0.1 CEU) of CPE credit. This annual joint CPE session allows boards of pharmacy members and staff, as well as schools and colleges of pharmacy, the opportunity to display posters that share information about their organization’s latest legislative issues, technology, policy development, and/or patient or public safety initiatives as they relate to the theme of “Strengthening Public Protection.” The deadline to reserve a spot as a poster presenter is March 11, 2011. Those interested in participating should contact NABP Professional Affairs Manager Eileen Lewalski via e-mail at elewalski@nabp.net.

More information about the CPE sessions offered at the Annual Meeting will be available on the NABP Web site.

Keynote Address

Providing attendees the special opportunity to learn about what is needed to reach the outer planets and other seemingly impossible goals is the Annual Meeting Keynote Address. Steven Squyres, acclaimed scientist and lead investigator of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, will share his experience of leading a team to get the twin, robotic rovers named Spirit and Opportunity to land on and explore the surface of Mars, while speaking on the topic, “Working in Changing Environments: Lessons from the Mars Exploration Rover Mission.” Squyres will present to attendees never before seen photos and share the story of Spirit and Opportunity’s initial conception in 1987 through development, and the design process that led to an extraordinary performance, launch, landing, and six years of exploration on Mars. Squyres, whose work has focused on Mars and the moons of the outer planets, is best known for his research on the study of water on Mars and of a possible ocean on Jupiter’s moon Europa. He has participated in many of NASA’s other planetary exploration missions, including the Voyager Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the Cassini mission to Saturn. Squyres is currently the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University, and has served as the chair of the NASA Space Science Advisory Committee. The Keynote Address will take place Sunday, May 22, at 12:30 PM, during the First Business Session.
