NABP 104th Annual Meeting Provides Attendees with Important Business Sessions, Timely CPE, and Several Networking Opportunities
Held in the heart of Baltimore, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP® ) 104th Annual Meeting, “Charting the Course – New Passages to Protecting the Public Health,” will provide attendees with the opportunity to help influence the future of NABP through their involvement in NABP business sessions, during which delegates will be able to participate in the election of the new Executive Committee officers and members and vote on amendments to the NABP Constitution and Bylaws. In addition to these important business sessions, board of pharmacy members and others in the pharmacy profession may earn up to nine hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) while networking with their peers. The meeting will take place May 17-20, 2008, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore, MD.
Continuing Pharmacy Education
CPE designed to address current issues affecting the regulation of pharmacy practice will be available to attendees of the Annual Meeting. All Annual Meeting participants will have the opportunity to attend four joint programming sessions. In addition, there will be a special pre-meeting session as well as two sessions held concurrently: one geared for state board of pharmacy executive officers and members and the other for compliance staff.
The Pre-Meeting Programming, “Teen Addiction – Prescription Medications: The New Heroin?,” will take place on Saturday, May 17, from 2 to 4 pm. New this year, attendees can now earn CPE credit during the Educational Poster Session, which will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 8 to 11:30 am. In addition, the Joint CPE Programming session “Legislative and Regulatory Update,” will be held later that day from 4 to 5 pm. On Monday, May 19, the Joint CPE Programming session “Pedigree Update: RFID and Diversion from Common Carriers,” will take place from 8:15 to 10:15 am, and on Tuesday, May 20, two CPE Programming sessions will be held concurrently from 9 to 10:30 am. Executive officers and board members may want to attend the session “Medicaid Fraud: Tamper-Resistant Prescription Pads and Beyond,” and compliance officers may want to attend “Case Strategy: How to Investigate an Internet Pharmacy.” The last Joint CPE Programming session, “Compounding Update: Where is USP 797?,” will also be held on Tuesday from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm.
Keynote Address
Speaking on the topic of “Healthcare Reform: New Ideas for An Old Debate,” former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle will captivate attendees as he examines America’s health care system and lays out a series of ideas for solutions to the country’s problems. One of the most influential political figures in the United States, Senator Daschle was first elected to the Senate in 1986, and became the first co-chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee two years later. During his tenure as leader, Senator Daschle co-managed the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton; led the Senate in response to the September 11th attacks; took action upon an anthrax attack on his office; and in 2007, along with former Senate Majority Leaders George Mitchell, Bob Dole, and Howard Baker, created the Bipartisan Policy Center, an organization dedicated to finding common ground on some of today’s pressing public policy challenges. Today, Senator Daschle is a special policy advisor to the law firm of Alston and Bird where he provides strategic advice on public policy issues, such as climate change, energy, health care, trade, financial services, and telecommunications. He is also a distinguished fellow at the Center for American Progress, a visiting professor at Georgetown University, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition, Senator Daschle serves on the advisory boards of Intermedia Partners and BP America, Inc, and on the board of directors for CB Richard Ellis, Mascoma Corporation, Prime BioSolutions, the Freedom Forum, the Mayo Clinic, the LBJ Foundation, and the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. Senator Daschle has published articles in newspapers and periodicals, and is the author of the book, Like No Other Time. In the spring of 2008 he is releasing a new book, Critical: What We Can Do About the Health Care Crisis, identifying the problems our country faces in providing quality health care, and offering innovative solutions to this crisis. The keynote address, sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, will take place during the First Business Session held on Sunday, May 18, at noon.
Special Programming
The Hospitality Brunch, which is sponsored by Pearson VUE and takes place on Sunday, May 18, from 8 to 11:30 am, will offer attendees a chance to network with their peers while enjoying a brunch buffet. The brunch will be held in the same area as the Educational Poster Session, which provides attendees the opportunity to view member boards of pharmacy’s best or most noteworthy legislative issues, policy development, and disciplinary cases, as well as research results from schools and colleges of pharmacy as these topics relate to protecting public health. Attendees have the opportunity to earn CPE through interactive participation with the presenters. In addition to the poster session, educational table top displays by NABP, federal regulatory agencies, and other organizations will highlight important issues and/or programs, and members of the Maryland Board of Pharmacy will offer their local perspectives on the must-see sites.
Board members who have recently been appointed to a board of pharmacy, or those attending their first NABP Annual Meeting, will want to attend the Annual Meeting Orientation on Saturday, May 17, from 5 to 6 pm. The program offers a look at the procedures followed during the Annual Meeting.
Sponsored by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc, the President’s Welcome Reception will also take place on Saturday, May 17, from 7 to 10 pm. In addition to honoring NABP President Oren M. Peacock, Jr, RPh, and his wife Elizabeth, the Welcome Reception offers attendees the opportunity to catch up with old friends and acquaintances.
Meeting participants are invited to attend the NABP/USP Breakfast, sponsored by the United States Pharmacopeia, held Monday, May 19, from 7 to 8 am. On Tuesday, May 20, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) will sponsor the NABP/NACDS Reception from 5:45 to 6:45 pm.
The Association’s Annual Awards Dinner, also held on Tuesday, May 20, will conclude the Annual Meeting and will begin at 7 pm. The Awards Dinner honors those individuals who have contributed their time and talents to advancing the principles of NABP and the practice of pharmacy. This special evening recognizes the efforts of the NABP chairman, president, and honorary president, and the recipients of various NABP awards. Semiformal attire is required.

NABP and the NABP Foundation are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn up to seven (7) contact hours (0.7 continuing education units) of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to the NABP office. A validated Statement of Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Credit.
