NABP 104th Annual Meeting Offers Attendees Up to Nine Hours of CPE Credit While Learning from Experts in the Pharmacy Profession
Attendees of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) 104th Annual Meeting have the opportunity to earn up to nine contact hours (0.9 CEUs) of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-approved continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit. CPE sessions will be presented by some of pharmacy’s most knowledgeable and riveting speakers, including a special pre-meeting session for all attendees, four joint CPE sessions, and two concurrent sessions: one geared specifically for state board of pharmacy executive officers and members and one geared for compliance staff. The Annual Meeting will be held May 17-20, 2008, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, in Baltimore, MD.
Saturday, May 17
From 2 to 4 pm, meeting attendees will learn about the rising problem of teen addiction to prescription pain medications in the CPE session, “Teen Addiction – Prescription Medications: The New Heroin?” This special training session will discuss the rising issue, as well as sources of prescription drugs, the role the Internet plays, and strategies for abuse prevention. Three representatives from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America will speak during this session: Thomas A. Hedrick, Jr, senior communications officer and founding member, Barbara Delaney, MBA, director of research, and Phil Bauer, from the parent advisory board. This session is sponsored by Walgreen Co.
Sunday, May 18
The first Joint CPE Programming session is the Educational Poster Session from 8 to 11:30 am. The Poster Session will include poster displays from the California State Board of Pharmacy, Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, North Dakota State University College of Pharmacy, Temple University School of Pharmacy, University of Southern Nevada College of Pharmacy, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development that will present topics on protecting the public health. CPE is earned through interactive participation with presenters for at least one hour.
From 4 to 5 pm, attendees will review recent federal and state legislative and regulatory initiatives of interest to the boards of pharmacy in the Joint CPE Programming session, “Legislative and Regulatory Update.” Speakers for this session are NABP’s Joshua M. Bolin, BA, board liaison, and Eileen Lewalski, PharmD, JD, professional affairs manager. This session is sponsored by Medco Health Solutions, Inc.

The third Joint CPE Programming session is “Pedigree Update: RFID and Diversion from Common Carriers.” From 8:15 to 10:15 am, attendees will hear speakers Ryan Toole, supervisory special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Ilisa Bernstein, PharmD, JD, director of pharmacy affairs, Food and Drug Administration, examine how industry and enforcement officials have incorporated electronic tools in order to control counterfeit drugs and devices that pose significant threats to the public health, as well as to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the drug distribution process. “Medicaid Fraud: Tamper-Resistant Prescription Pads and Beyond” is the title for the executive officer and board member CPE session. From 9 to 10:30 am, speakers will discuss findings pertaining to fraudulent activities in pharmacy and their efforts to combat such activities, as well as how the boards of pharmacy may work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Jason Weinstock, CMS, law enforcement coordinator, will speak alongside Michael A. Burleson, RPh, executive director of the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy on this issue. This session is sponsored by Merck & Co, Inc. At the same time, from 9 to 10:30 am, the compliance officer CPE session will take place. In this session, “Case Strategy: How to Investigate an Internet Pharmacy,” speakers Benjamin N. Gluck, MA, JD, partner and shareholder from Bird, Marella, Boxer, Wolpert, Nessim, Drooks, and Lincenberg, A Professional Corporation, and Robert Ratcliff, inspector from the California State Board of Pharmacy will discuss strategies to build a case against harmful Internet pharmacies that are placing the public health at risk.
Following both these sessions, from 10:45-12:15 pm, is the last Joint CPE session. Meeting participants will hear from United States Pharmacopeia’s Ruth K. Miller, JD, senior counsel, and Claudia C. Okeke, PhD, RPh, scientific fellow, who will examine recent updates to United States Pharmacopeia Chapter 797 sterile compounding standards in the session, “Compounding Update: Where is USP 797?”

NABP and the NABP Foundation are approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Provider Number: 205. Participants may earn up to seven (7) contact hours (0.7 continuing education units) of ACPE-approved continuing education credit from NABP. Participants in continuing pharmacy education programs will receive credit by completing a “Statement of Continuing Pharmacy Education Participation” and submitting it to the NABP office. A validated Statement of Credit will be sent as proof of participation within approximately six weeks. Full attendance and completion of a program evaluation form for each session are required to receive continuing pharmacy education credit and a Statement of Credit.
