More Providers Used Electronic Prescribing in 2012

Use of e-prescribing has continued to rise, with 788 million prescriptions routed electronically in 2012 compared with 570 million in 2011, a 38% increase according to the latest National Progress Report on E-Prescribing and Safe-Rx Rankings. The report, published by Surescripts, operator of the largest e-prescription network that connects prescribers’ e-prescribing software to pharmacies, also indicates that 93% of community pharmacies are connected for e-prescription routing. Further, there was a 25% increase in the number of prescribers routing prescriptions electronically, from 390,000 prescribers in 2011 to 489,000 in 2012.
