Missouri Pharmacies Implementing Database to Track PSE Sales
Pharmacies in Missouri are beginning to implement a database that will track sales of pseudoephedrine (PSE), the primary precursor ingredient in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, and automatically deny sales to customers who have already purchased the legal daily limit. The tracking system also alerts law enforcement about attempted over-the-limit PSE purchases. Fake identification cards and multiple purchasers living at the same address will also be flagged for law enforcement. The new system meets Missouri code requirements, which were adopted on August 28, 2009, and mandate that pharmacies use an electronic log to track PSE sales. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services developed emergency rules (PDF) for the implementation of the PSE sales tracking program which took effect on September 28, 2010. Missouri law enforcement and pharmacy personnel will receive training on the new system, which was developed by Appriss Inc and funded by pharmaceutical companies. More information is available on the Missouri DHSS Web site and in a press release.
