Effective August 28, 2007, legislation passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed into law by the governor gave pharmacists the statutory authority to administer viral influenza vaccinations and provide medication therapy services per protocol with a physician, subject to joint promulgation of rules by the Board of Pharmacy and the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. Joint rules are being drafted by the boards, but final language is still pending at press time. Note: Pharmacists are not authorized to begin administration of medications or participate in any collaborative agreement with a physician until the rules are promulgated. Legislation also passed that authorizes pharmacists to administer other medications per patient-specific prescription orders. New legislation also provides for the establishment of the Well-being committee to assist impaired pharmacists and technicians in need of treatment. Implementation of the committee is pending appropriation of funds by the legislature and promulgation of rules by the Board.
