Medication Disposal Programs Offered Across the Nation
As more attention is being focused on the alarming rates of prescription drug misuse and abuse, proper disposal of unused medications has been identified as one method of prevention. To aid consumers, chain and independent pharmacy locations have been implementing disposal programs. The TakeAway Environmental Return System is one such program being offered at various pharmacy locations across the country. This program provides consumers a safe means for disposing of unused medications using postage-paid envelopes available for purchase in the pharmacies. Customers can use the envelopes to mail unused, unwanted non-controlled substance medications for environmentally safe disposal. In another available program, the pharmacy collects non-controlled substance medications in large containers which are then shipped by the pharmacy for proper destruction. Others partner with law enforcement to provide take-back events that can accept controlled substances. A program locator is available on the Sharps Compliance Web site, and various disposal program locations can also be found on the Dispose My Meds Web site. Some programs, including the one using disposal by mail, cannot accept controlled substances. Pharmacies have launched such programs to help consumers get unused, unwanted medications out of the home in order to prevent misuse and abuse.
