Medication Disposal Drop Box Program Pilot Launched in Fairfield County, CT
Police departments in four Fairfield County, CT towns are providing residents a secure, legal, and anonymous means for safely disposing of unused, unwanted, and expired medications. Beginning June 1, 2011, secure medication disposal drop boxes will be available at police headquarters in Greenwich, New Canaan, and Ridgefield, CT, with a drop box in Wilton, CT, to follow soon. Residents may discard unneeded medications with no questions asked and no forms to complete, and the drop boxes will be available on an ongoing basis. Ingrid Gillespie, director of the Lower Fairfield County Regional Action Council (LFCRAC), states that the pilot project will provide data to help with the development of policies that can help implement the program in other interested Connecticut communities. The program has been coordinated by LFCRAC, a member of the Connecticut Prevention Network, and has been developed in cooperation with the Department of Consumer Protection Drug Control Division, local prevention councils, environmental departments, and the four police departments providing the drop box locations.
