Medical Marijuana Bill Passes DC Council
Awaits Mayor's Signature and Congress’ Approval
Certain patients in the District of Columbia may be allowed to use medical marijuana under a bill approved by the DC Council on May 4, 2010 and expected to be signed into law by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, as reported by the Washington Post. The law would allow physicians to recommend medical marijuana to patients suffering from HIV, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, cancer, or a chronic debilitating condition, and would allow patients to possess up to two ounces a month. The law would also give Mayor Fenty the authority to raise the amount to four ounces without further council action, according to the New York Times. Patients, caregivers, dispensaries, and cultivators will be required to register with the city, and the mayor will be permitted to establish up to eight dispensaries. If signed by Mayor Fenty as expected, the bill goes to Congress, which has 30 days to review it before it becomes law.
