Maine Law to Allow Importation of Prescription Drugs for Personal Uses

Topics: Patient safety

A new law in Maine will allow residents to import prescription drugs for personal use from mail order pharmacies located in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. An “Act To Facilitate the Licensing of International Mail Order Prescription Pharmacies by the Maine Board of Pharmacy" (LD 171) was passed by the state’s legislature and became law on June 27, 2013. Under the law, a licensed retail pharmacy located in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom, “that meets its country’s statutory and regulatory requirements may export prescription drugs by mail or carrier to a resident of [Maine] for that resident’s personal use.” Additional information about the new Maine law is available in a Chain Drug Review article. Federal law does not allow for medication importation, except in certain circumstances, because the safety of imported drugs cannot be guaranteed by FDA.
