Legislation to Reschedule Products Containing Hydrocodone as Schedule II Drugs Introduced to Congress

Topics: Controlled substances and Prescription drug abuse

With the aim of curbing prescription drug abuse, bipartisan legislation that would reclassify drug products containing hydrocodone as Schedule II controlled substances (CS) was introduced to Congress on March 20, 2013. If products containing hydrocodone are reclassified as Schedule II CS, patients would be required to present an original prescription each time a prescription is filled, as they would no longer be able to obtain refills. Also, individuals convicted of trafficking the drugs would face harsher fines and penalties, indicates a news release from the office of Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV). The House Bill (HR 1285) was introduced by Representatives Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Edward Markey (D-MA). A companion bill has been introduced to the US Senate by Senators Manchin and Mark Kirk (R-IL).
