Chinese law enforcement arrested 1,770 suspects and seized $315 million worth of counterfeit drugs and packaging in a police operation on November 17, 2011. The raid was part of a nationwide effort involving 16,000 police officers and breaking up “more than 1,400 dens that made or sold fake medicine,” as reported by AFP. AFP also reports that the counterfeit products contained banned chemicals and some of the products were re-packaged expired pharmaceuticals with forged documents. The counterfeit products were reportedly being marketed online and also to illegal pharmacies and clinics. The Partnership for Safe Medicines states that authorities found counterfeits of cancer medication, anti-infectives, growth hormones, and medicines for gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and gynecological diseases.
