Law Enforcement Collects 188 Tons of Unwanted Medications for Safe Disposal at DEA's Second Take-Back Event
Collecting 188 tons of unwanted medications at over 5,300 sites across the country, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 30, 2011, was a success. The event provided consumers a means to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs, including controlled substances, helping to safeguard their families and communities from drug poisonings, and prescription misuse and abuse. The 188 tons, or 376,593 pounds, of unwanted medications collected is in addition to the 121 tons collected during the first drug take-back event in September, for a total of 309 tons of unused, unneeded prescription drugs removed from the nation’s homes. As noted by DEA administrator, Michele M. Leonhart, the amount of unwanted prescription drugs collected “represents a clear need for a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs.” DEA will continue to schedule take-back events until the regulations to implement the Safe and Secure Drug Disposal Act of 2010 are in place.
