LA Medical Marijuana Store Ban May Be Rescinded, but Federal Authorities Are Targeting the Shops

A ban on medical marijuana shops in Los Angeles, CA has been rescinded by the LA City Council. The ban was approved by the City Council in July 2012, but medical marijuana advocates collected enough signatures to place the issue on the ballot for voters in March 2013. The scheduled referendum effectively placed the ban on hold and Council members voted to rescind the ban. The City Council must vote on the issue again, however, as the 11-2 vote was not unanimous, Reuters reports. Prior to the City Council vote, federal officials partnered with local law enforcement to take action against medical marijuana stores in the Los Angeles area. Warning letters were sent to 68 stores, search warrants were executed on three stores, and civil lawsuits were also filed against three store properties, as reported in a press release from the US Attorney’s Office, Central District of California. Additional information about these actions is available in an NBC Southern California article
