Iowa Drug Repository Program Serves Growing Number of Patients

Topics: Medication collection program disposal

The Iowa Prescription Drug Donation Repository Program, administered through the Iowa Department of Public Health, continues to grow, providing more prescription drug assistance to uninsured and underinsured Iowans. The Des Moines Register reports that the program has grown from serving 780 patients in 2007 when 318,427 units were donated, to 6,237 patients in 2010, with more than one million units donated. Donated units include medications and medical supplies such as bandages. Many donations come from long-term care facilities, and program regulations (PDF) ensure that donated unused medications are in their original sealed and tamper-evident packaging, have been properly stored, and have an expiration date more than six months after the date the drug was donated. Staff of the program told the Des Moines Register that the program helps avoid waste, serves uninsured patients, and helps prevent hospitalizations due to lack of access to medications.
