Indiana News: Technicians May No Longer Apply Online
Published in the May 2007 Indiana Board of Pharmacy Newsletter
The Board of Pharmacy has eliminated the availability of online applications for technicians due to certification processing issues. Since certifying technicians began in January 2004, Board of Pharmacy staff has dealt with two (2) major issues with online applications for technicians/technicians-in-training.
The first is multiple applications for the same person prior to issuing technician certification. After an individual received a technician-in-training certification, the person completed the training and then improperly reapplied (in lieu of submitting the training documentation that triggers the issuance of the technician certification). By handling only paper applications, Board of Pharmacy staff can check the licensing system to determine if the applicant is a duplicate and return the application fee check. When online applications were available, staff would reimburse the payment, which is a much more tedious task.
The second issue was reapplication for a license instead of renewing the license. Technicians’ first round of renewals occurred in 2006. Many failed to renew and, to avoid the $50 late fee, reapplied. Either intentionally or unintentionally, a technician who attempts to improperly reapply instead of renewing will be spotted by staff with paper-only applications.
The paper-only application for certification ensures that neither of these issues arises when certifying technicians/ technicians-in-training.
Please note that a technician-in-training may work for thirty (30) days without a permit once he or she applies for certification pursuant to IC 25-26-19-6(b); however, the technician-in-training must possess the receipt indicating that the fee was paid. Since the receipt will be presented to the technician-in-training with his or her blue card/pocket card once it is issued by Board of Pharmacy staff (after processing the paper application), the Blue Card Rule remains applicable to all pharmacy staff including technicians-in-training inside of the thirty (30) day exception.
