Hearing Addressed Need for Single Federal Drug Disposal Guideline
At a hearing on drug waste and disposal, US Senator Herb Kohl, Chairman of the Special Committee on Aging, emphasized the need for consistent federal guidelines for proper and safe disposal of unused medications. Kohl also called on DEA to update regulations to allow for the safe disposal of controlled substances through medication disposal programs. Strategies such as improving patient medication adherence, expanding medication therapy management programs, and limiting initial dispensing for certain medications with high non-compliance rates, were discussed as means to lower the amount of unused drugs at the prescribing and dispensing stages. DEA, Office of National Drug Control Policy, and representatives from successful take-back programs took part in the discussion.
