Governors Petition DEA to Reclassify Marijuana as Schedule II
A petition to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule II controlled substance with accepted medical use was filed with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) by Washington Governor Chris Gregoire and Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee. Gregoire stated in a press release that “There is simply no question that pharmacists could safely and reliably dispense cannabis to patients – just as they do for other controlled and more problematic drugs.” Governor Chafee stated that he and Gregoire filed the petition “to urge the Federal Government to consider allowing the safe, reliable, regulated use of marijuana for patients who are suffering," as indicated in a press release on November 30, 2011. Washington and Rhode Island are among the 17 states and jurisdictions that have adopted medical marijuana laws, and according to The Seattle Times, the governors filed the petitions in hopes of resolving the conflict between federal and state laws. The DEA has rejected similar prior petitions, but Gregoire also noted that this is the first petition sponsored by governors, reports The Seattle Times.
