Gary A. Schnabel, RN, RPh, Oregon Pharmacist, Begins Term as NABP President During the Association's 105th Annual Meeting

Gary A. Schnabel, RN, RPh, Oregon pharmacist, began his term as president of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP® ) during the Final Business Session of the Association’s 105th Annual Meeting, May 16-19, 2009, in Miami, FL. During his presidency, Mr Schnabel is committed to advancing the practice and regulation of pharmacy with a focus on patient safety and integration of pharmacist care.

Mr Schnabel was sworn in as the 105th NABP president after serving a one-year term as the Association’s president-elect and one year as treasurer. Prior to that, Mr Schnabel served as a member of the NABP Executive Committee representing District 7 for four years. After his presidency concludes, he will serve a one-year term as chairperson of the Association’s Executive Committee.

Currently the executive director of the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy, Mr Schnabel began his employment with the Board in 1994 as compliance director, before being named executive director in 1999. Prior to joining the Board, he held positions such as pharmacy manager, director of pharmacy, and director of intravenous services in various pharmacy practice settings. Mr Schnabel also owned an independent pharmacy consulting practice from 1990 to 1995.

Mr Schnabel is an active member of NABP and other pharmacy organizations, serving on committees and several task forces. These include the NABP Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, the NABP Task Force on Active/Associate Membership, the NABP Task Force on Telepharmacy and the Implementation of the Medicare Drug Benefit Medication Therapy Management Provisions, the Task Force to Improve the Care of Terminally Ill Oregonians, convened by Oregon Health Sciences University, the 69th Legislative Assembly’s Task Force on Pain and Symptom Management, and the Board of Pharmacy Community Based Care Pharmacy Committee. In addition, Mr Schnabel was a part of the Oregon Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Oregon Health Care Quality Corporation.  

Among his other activities, Mr Schnabel has been an active member of the Oregon State Pharmacy Association, serving as vice president in 1990 and on the House of Delegates from 1984 to 1985 and 1994 to 1995. He has also been a member of the Oregon Society of Hospital Pharmacists, now known as the Oregon Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Oregon Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.

A graduate of Oregon State University, Mr Schnabel graduated with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy.
